What we do for you

A typical self assessment return with Accountax includes everything from your first call to the final HMRC submission. We don't just type your numbers into a form — we look at your full position and make sure you're paying the right amount of tax, not a penny more.

Who needs to file a self assessment?

You'll usually need to file a return if any of the following apply:

Not sure if you need to file? Give us a quick call and we'll tell you within five minutes — there's no charge for the conversation.

Important deadlines to remember. Online self assessment returns must be filed by 31st January following the end of the tax year (5th April). Paper returns have an earlier deadline of 31st October. The payment of any tax owed is also due by 31st January, with a second payment on account by 31st July if your tax bill is over £1,000.

Why use a local accountant for your self assessment?

You can technically file your own self assessment through HMRC's online service. Many people do. But there are good reasons most professionals, landlords and higher earners eventually switch to using an accountant — and three reasons in particular:

You'll almost certainly save more than you spend. Most new clients we take on were missing reliefs they didn't know existed — pension contributions claimed wrongly, home office expenses overlooked, mileage missed, capital allowances forgotten. Our fee is often paid for several times over by the tax we save in the first year alone.

You eliminate the risk of HMRC penalties. A late filing is an automatic £100 penalty, rising further the longer it goes unfiled. Errors on the return can trigger investigations that take months to resolve. When we handle your return, you have a professional standing between you and HMRC if anything is queried.

You get your evenings back in January. The genuine value most of our clients talk about isn't the money saved — it's the relief of not spending two weekends in January wrestling with HMRC's website.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

How much does a self assessment tax return cost?

Our fees depend on the complexity of your return — a straightforward employment-and-savings return is at the lower end, while landlords with multiple properties or directors with overseas income cost more. We always agree a fixed fee upfront after a free consultation, so there are never any surprises. Most personal returns range from around £150 to £400 plus VAT.

What information do I need to give you?

It depends on your circumstances, but usually: your P60 and P11D if employed, summary of self-employed income and expenses, dividend vouchers if a director, rental statements if a landlord, interest certificates from your banks, and details of any pension contributions and Gift Aid donations. We'll send you a simple checklist tailored to your situation so you know exactly what to gather.

How long does it take to complete my return?

Once we have all your information, we typically prepare and send your return for review within 5-10 working days. In the lead up to the 31st January deadline it may take a little longer, which is why we recommend submitting your records to us in November or December if possible.

Can you help if I've missed the January 31st deadline?

Yes. The penalties get worse the longer you leave it, so the sooner we file the better. We can usually have a late return filed within a week of receiving your information, which stops further penalties accruing. We can also help you appeal penalties if there are reasonable grounds.

Do you handle HMRC correspondence on my behalf?

Yes. We register as your agent with HMRC, which means we can talk to them directly, receive copies of any correspondence, and handle queries without you needing to be involved. If HMRC opens an enquiry into your return we'll handle the response and supporting evidence.

I've never filed a self assessment before — can you help me register?

Absolutely. If this is your first year needing to file, we'll register you with HMRC, get you a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number, and walk you through everything. Many of our long-term clients started this way.
